Minors are a type of academic plan that students may pursue at CSUMB by taking required courses in a secondary academic discipline in addition to their major to acquire a significant breadth and appropriate depth in an area outside of their main topic of study. Minors consist of, at a minimum, twelve assessable semester units, at least six of which must be upper-division. Twelve of the units taken to complete a minor may not be used in fulfillment of other minors, concentrations, or major requirements. The minor may be in a single subject or interdisciplinary.

Students may not declare or receive a minor in the same subject as the major, and the major and minor may not have the same title. The minimum overall GPA in courses toward the minor is 2.0. A minor can only be taken by a CSUMB undergraduate and must be completed with the rest of the degree. Although one major may require a minor in another discipline, a minor is not generally required for graduation.
